MUSIC THERAPY GROUPS

Mondays 4:00 - 5:00

$25.00/session

The structure of each group is based on a basic picture/word schedule so that the child knows the sequence of events. The structure of music is introduced during the first session as we use body percussion (clapping, patting etc.) and play maracas to introduce the concept of a steady beat. As the children progress through the program more instruments are included so they experience a variety of sounds and tactile experiences.

Social skills such as identifying, sharing and trading instruments are included in each session. Movement activities begin with simple motions using scarves and streamers and progress to more choreographed dances as the abilities of the children increase.

The “sing a book” activity is an important part of each session. By combining music with visuals and sign language the child becomes actively involved in the materials presented and has many opportunities to participate to the fullest level of his or her ability.

A short relaxation session is included in which the children are taught to calm their bodies and breathe deeply while I play my flute (which is really an alto recorder). The “Bright Light” song is used as a closing song for every group and the children are told to “give yourself a hug because you are wonderful the way you are!” We then finish with a music cheer “1-2-3-Yay Music!”
