The church I attend, Desert Springs Four Square Church is offering a Sunday School Class for children with Special Needs.  It has been on my heart to provide this for families for a while.  I've heard many "horror" stories of churches that have asked families to leave or kicked them out because they did not understand or know how to work with their child with special needs.  I have partnered up with our Children's Pastor, Pastor Angie Barker.  With my input and her hard work, we have a sensory friendly room, appropriate curriculum and trained personnel to help your child enjoy a great time of Worship on Sundays, and to provide you as parents, a safe and secure place for your child to be while you get the opportunity to take time for yourselves and re-new in worship and biblical teaching each Sunday. 

 

The staff that will be working with your children are people from Baio Enterprises, Inc. and others that we have met, interviewed, and who have background in special needs.  The Baio girls you might recognize are Helena Ruiz (Hab-Com), Courtney Nakata (Hab-Com), Heather Graham (previously front office and assists as needed) and myself, Marti Baio.  Another staff member is Ashleigh who is studying special ed at ASU.  We will always have 2 trained staff in the room and 1 or more volunteers from our church family.

 

The curriculum is kid friendly and adaptable to a wide range of ages.  For those children that would enjoy music, they can participate in praise and worship while singing with a live band.  If your child doesn't like the noise level of band music, we will have enough staff to do a more quiet praise time in the Safe Harbor Classroom.  Praise and worship will be followed by a biblical teaching, a snack (parents provide due to special dietary concerns), a craft, and time to socialize with peers.

 

Parents will be provided with a pager that will buzz if the staff needs for them to leave the sanctuary to come to the need of their child while in class.  Parents will fill out a brief form that will tell the Safe Harbor staff information regarding allergies, behavior needs, communication skills, etc. so that we understand your child the best we can.
